Keeping Homes Safe From Burglars

“Tips on how to keep your home safe from burglars.”(Article found in “The Bottom Line Personal” magazine winter 2010)

1. Buy an alarm system with motion and light sensors and that has a zone alarm control system which would control each room of the house. Even better to also have a generic sign posted outside rather than a detailed one.

2. Make sure it is turned on even if you are away for 15 minutes since the sophisticated burglars watch neighborhoods and can know when one leaves for work etc.

3. Make sure that your jewelry or valuables are not hidden in the bedroom since that is the first place they would look such as the underwear drawer or high shelves, or even under the mattress. It’s better to keep the high value jewelry not worn too much in a safe deposit box. Never hide everything in one place but multiple places such as places that burglars would never consider.

4. Having a small dog that barks a lot can be a good deterrent too because they can alert the owner and make lots of noise.

5. Make sure the landscape near the windows are trimmed so that burglars can’t get in through the windows and that they can’t peer in.

6.Don’t leave lights on continuously since that is not a good deterrent. It’s better to have motion detectors that turn on and off or a timed light.

7. It’s better to have someone pick up your mail rather than having it stopped. Since information can be leaked fast due to social media. Having someone stop by several times per day is best.
