Why You Need A Personal Umbrella Policy

> Today, since jury awards on the rise, your assets could be at risk. The coverage that you currently have on your personal auto and home may not be enough. The average jury cases are about $985,675. Most people on average only have $100,000 for each person and $300,000 for each accident on their bodily injury.  When someone is sued beyond their limits ,the rest comes out of their pocket.

For example if the bodily injury is $500,000, and the jury award is 1.3 million, then the amount paid by the insured would be $800,000. Auto accidents result in about 85% of umbrella claims.

The number one cause of personal liability on the home is dog bites.  If the average liability for homeowner is $300,000 and the jury award was $600,000 then the amount paid is $300,000.
Another situation could be a teenage driver driving while intoxicated that causes a multiple car collision.

When buying an umbrella policy your underlying auto and home liability would be extended  to another one million.

Other incidents covered by an umbrella policy not covered by auto and home.

They are: International Coverage-Incidents that happen abroad
Vacation Rental Liability -for rented boats and jet skis
Defense Coverage- for legal defense when the primary auto or home carrier does not have a duty to defend
Personal Injury- for liability due to slander, libel, and defamation of character especially due to the social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin.
