Here again another friendly tip for this fall and winter!
If you are wondering what can cause this it’s is when outdoor temperatures drop below freezing and the freezing water expands inside the pipes and thus causing them to burst.
Here are some preventative frozen pipes tips to take heed.
1. Insulate pipes, especially those closest to the outside walls , attics, or crawl space where the chance of freezing is greatest
2. Seal air leaks surrounding or near pipes
3. Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
4. Disconnect all outdoor hoses and turn off water to the exterior faucets and sprinkler systems.
5. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
6. During the cold spell turn on both the hot and cold faucets near outside walls to allow a small trickle of water to run during the night.
7. If you need to be away from home, leave the heat on and drain your water system before you go.
8. When you are away from your house, you should leave the heat on at least 55F.
9. Identify the locations of shutoff valves so that you are prepared to stop the flow of water as soon as possible when a pipe bursts.
Tips on what to do when your pipes burst.
1. Shut off the water immediately to prevent additional damage
2.Take proper precautions to avoid an electrical shock from being near standing water.
3. Take an inventory of any damages property or possessions
4Contact your local agent/ claims office to help you locate a vendor specializing in emergency water mitigation services.
